Recycling Initiative for Schools & Communities

kablogoKeep America Beautiful (KAB) is a leading national non-profit organization ( Its mission: To inspire and educate people to take action every day to improve and beautify their community environment.

As the KAB designated State Recycling Organization, Recycle Hawai‘i partners with KAB Local Affiliates and businesses to promote KAB’s Recycle-Bowl and America Recycles Day (November 15th). These annual programs engage island residents and visitors alike about the importance of reducing our waste stream by reusing and recycling valuable resource materials.

What? The Recycle Bowl (RB) Competition is a nationwide recycling contest open to all elementary, middle and high schools. RB is an effective way to kick off or improve your school recycling program.

How? Schools take as much of their existing paper, plastic, metal, glass and HI5 redeemables at school to record type and volume/weight before recycling. Schools report their recycle data plus school enrollment in a brief report submitted to KAB in mid-December. Once reports are received and verified, KAB announces the top school winner for each state the following Spring. Local businesses serve as 'green partners' by sponsoring prizes for the top state winner(s).

When? This four-week competition begins in mid-October and culminates on November 15, America Recycles Day. Details, registration and event materials are available at

Earth-Friendly Schools Hawai`i

The 'Earth-Friendly Schools' (EFS) program is a partnership between Recycle Hawai‘i and the Performing and Fine Artists for World Peace, an educational non-profit organization based on Hawai‘i Island. The goal of EFS is to incentivize and recognize ‘green projects’ carried out by students and staff in schools and their community. EFS projects focus one or more areas of service-learning, resource awareness and environmental education including reducing litter, improving recycling, beautification, gardening, composting, sustainability and preservation of natural resources and cultural practices. Earth Patriot: Origins

Earth Patriot: Origins is a young adult novel written by Hawai`i Island author Howard Shapiro with Leilehua Yuen, Hawaiian cultural and language consultant and illustrations by artist-songwriter Bolo.

The story is about a teenager who incorporates into his life the best of traditional Native Hawaiian culture with that of modern society. It speaks about Hawaiian values, the importance of family, and environmental issues. The reading level is middle to high school, grades 6-12.
