How to Make Wire Recycle Bins

Making Wire HI5 Beverage Container Recycling bins

To make 16 bins you need:

* 100 feet of the 36” 2x4 pig wire
* 2 bags of Wire “J” clips (clips and crimping tool available at Ace)
* Small bolt cutters - 3+ sets
* Pliers – 3+ sets
* Signage
* 4 bags of 100 - 7” or 8” Plastic cable ties
* Shelters space in which to build

1.   Round up your volunteers. A minimum of three people is required to make 16 bins in 3 hours. (Building 50 bins should take about 9.5 hours.)

2.   Bins can be built to stack into four groups of four for easy transport.

3.   Measure out largest of the bins counting spaces up to 36. With bolt cutters, cut horizontal lengths at vertical point so that no sharp points protrude. Do this four times.

4.   While all this measuring and cutting takes place. Have one of the volunteers, using the pliers, pre-bend the wire clips into the shape of a “J.” This will help when connecting bins together.

5.   Measure out second largest of bins counting spaces up to 32. With bolt cutters, cut horizontal lengths at vertical point so that no sharp points protrude. Do this four times.

6.   Measure out third largest of bins counting spaces up to 28. With bolt cutters, cut horizontal lengths at vertical point so that no sharp points protrude. Do this four times.

7.   Measure out smallest of bins counting spaces up to 24. With bolt cutters, cut horizontal lengths at vertical point so that no sharp points protrude. Do this four times.

8.   With your crimping pliers, clamp a clip on top, bottom and two in the middle to make a cylindrical shaped bin.

9.   Do this with all 16 sets of wire.

10. Meanwhile, with one bin of each size, measure out the base of the bins. Cut so that one standard rectangle hangs over each end of the base of the bin.

11. Cut bases for 16 bins.

12. Place cut bases on top of bin and clamp to sides with clips. Cut excess wire. Be sure to make it fit as snug as possible. Bend any excess wire inside. Overhanging wire will catch on the bin sides and make stacking them together in fours very difficult.

13. Attach RECYCLE HAWAI`I license plate signs “Aluminum Cans Only” and/or “Plastic Bottles Only” in margins (or similar laminated signs).

14. Secure plates with four cable ties.

15. When placing bins in public, use cable ties ONLY to secure bins in place.  Depending on location one may be enough. In areas of high loss, use two—one at the top and one at the bottom.
