USED MOTOR OIL RECYCLING PROGRAM

The Recycle Hawai`i Do-It-Yourself (DIY) Used Motor Oil Recycling Program is successfully underway. Several Big Island businesses have generously agreed to participate by accepting used motor oil from residents who change their own oil. You may drop up to 10 gallons of uncontaminated oil off at the locations listed below.

This program is sponsored by the State and County of Hawai`i via the State ‘Used Oil Fund’ that is generated from a $.01 charge per barrel on every barrel of oil coming into the State. Recycle Hawai‘i’s program is the first of its kind in Hawai‘i. All the other islands have mostly unmanned drop-offs, with limited success. According to industry representatives, this program could be the ideal model for the State.

Used oil is locally collected by Hawai`i Petroleum or Unitek Services and shipped to O`ahu, Maui or the mainland for reprocessing.

INSTRUCTIONS:  Residents must sign in and verify that the oil is uncontaminated, and they must take their containers back. Please use clean, dry containers to store and transport your oil.
Please do not use Clorox/bleach bottles or chlorine tablet buckets.

Please feel free to download "Residential Used Motor Oil Collection Brochure"
for details about the program.

Acceptable: motor oil, gear oil, shock oil, hydraulic oil, transmission oil, and diesel.

Unacceptable: Gasoline, water, brake fluid, solvents, thinners, paints, antifreeze, and anything mixed with oil.
