WHY CHLORINE BLEACH CONTAINERS ARE NOT ACCEPTED

Chapter 279 is a FEDERAL LAW that allows for a certain amount of halogen to be present in used motor oil. Halogen contains chlorine compounds. HOWEVER, Halogen is considered a hazardous material. It is an oxidizer and a fire hazard. If enough of these chlorine compounds are present in used motor oil,
it could spontaneously combust. If more than 1000-ppm of halogen is present in recycled oils,
than the substance is considered hazardous waste.

When chlorine is present, even in miniscule amounts, specialized tests required of all recycled motor oils will indicate that the halogen 1000-ppm threshold has been exceeded. When used motor oil tests positive for chlorine contamination, it must be treated as toxic hazardous waste. Expensive testing and disposal methods are needed in order to manage the contaminated used motor oil and it cannot be recycled as a fuel to generate electricity.

Therefore, collection sites cannot accept used motor oil, gear oil, shock oil, hydraulic oil, transmission oil, or diesel that has been stored and transported in used chlorine bleach containers. Please store and transport your recycled oils in the commercial motor oil containers in which you purchased the new oil or in rinsed and dried milk, juice, or vinegar jugs. It is recommended to use only jugs with a spill proof lid.

Mahalo for your understanding!
